East African higher Education Quality Assurance Network Forum currently underway in Bujumbura, Burundi

Bujumbura, Burundi, 8th September, 2023: The 12th Annual East African Higher Education Quality Assurance Forum (EAQAN) is currently underway in Bujumbura, Burundi under the theme: “Nurturing Emerging Trends in Higher Education through quality Assurance”.  

The Forum, which kicked off on 5th September, 2023, provides an opportunity to higher education professionals, experts and other stakeholders in East African Community to reflect on the place of quality assurance in nurturing emerging trends in higher education not only in the region, but the continent and beyond.

East African Community Secretariat, Arusha, Tanzania, 6th September , 2023: The 10th Edition of the East Africa Internet Governance Forum (EA-IGF) convened in Kigali, Rwanda with a call for Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) experts in the region to take proactive steps towards ensuring that the internet continues to be a force for positive change in the region.

Jointly hosted by the East African Community and Rwanda Ministry of ICT and Innovation through the Rwanda Internet Community and Technology Alliance (RICTA), the Forum was convened under the theme: The Internet We Want – Empowering All People in East Africa. The theme is in line with the over-arching global Internet Governance Forum 2023 theme: The Internet We Want.

Call for Abstracts: 9th East African Health and Scientific Conference

The 12th Ordinary Session of the EAC Council of Ministers in the year 2006, approved the Regional East African Health and Scientific Conference & International Health Exhibition and Trade Fair to be convened in East Africa and hosted on a rotational basis by the EAC Partner States through their respective National Ministries responsible for EAC Affairs, the Ministry responsible for Health, and other relevant institutions and bodies, and in close collaboration with regional and international health-related NGOs, civil society organizations, individuals, and other stakeholders in the region.

8th EAC University Students' Debate on Regional Integration set for Bujumbura

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 1st September, 2023: The 8th East African Community University Student’s Debate on regional integration will be held from 18th to 19th October, 2023 in Bujumbura, Burundi under the theme: “EAC integration, peacebuilding and youth participation”.

The objective of the EAC University Debate is to enhance youth participation in the EAC integration agenda and processes. The debates and subsequent sensitization activities create an enabling environment for not only students and youth to play an active role in the integration process but offer space that enables them to learn more about the benefits, challenges and opportunities from the EAC integration.

East African Community Competition Authority holds capacity building activities on implementation of Competition Policy and integration of the Democratic Republic of Congo

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, 26th August, 2023: The East African Community Competition Authority (EACCA) organized capacity building workshops on regional competition policy aimed at integrating various stakeholders in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) into the EAC.

The Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) in charge of the National Economy, Hon. Vital Kamerhe, received the delegation from EACCA led by the Registrar, Ms. Lilian Kajuju Mukoronia.

Hon. Kamerhe said that the interests and destinies of African countries are interlinked hence the need to work for cooperation in order to promote economic development for all countries even as he affirmed that the Competition policy was important as it creates a conducive environment for investors in the Community.

Negotiations between EAC and Federal Republic of Somalia for admission into EAC begin in Nairobi, Kenya

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 22nd August, 2023: Negotiations between the East African Community (EAC) and the Federal Republic of Somalia for the entry of Somalia into the EAC begun in earnest in Nairobi, Kenya today.

The nine-day negotiations have brought together experts from the seven (7) EAC Partner States, the EAC Secretariat, East African Legislative Assembly and East African Court of Justice, and their counterparts from the Federal Republic of Somalia.

EAC Secretary General flags off 22 cyclists participating in regional cycling tour

East African Community Secretariat, Arusha, Tanzania, 17th August, 2023: The East African Community (EAC) Secretary General, Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mathuki, on Wednesday flagged off 22 cyclists who are participating in the 2023 edition of the Great African Cycling Safari (GACS) that will take them across five Partner States, namely Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda.

The cyclists who are on the third leg of their tour that will take them to Tanga, Dar es Salaam and Dodoma before heading to Burundi will cover a total of 6,000 km by the time their trip ends in Uganda in mid-September. The cyclists were flagged off in Jinja, Uganda on 1st August, 2023. More than 1,000 cyclists are expected to join the core cycling team at different stages as they ride across the Partner States.

Non-tariff Barriers and national protection impeding intra-EAC trade

East African Community Secretariat, Arusha, Tanzania, 16th August, 2023: Non-tariff Barriers (NTBs) and protectionism at the national level have been identified as the key factors impeding the growth of intra-EAC trade.

The East African Community (EAC) Secretary General Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mathuki said that the region was therefore working continuously to eliminate NTBs with 26 NTBs having been resolved out of the 33 that had been reported as of June 2023.

Dr. Mathuki added that seven (7) NTBs remained outstanding but were at different levels of resolution.

“To facilitate free movement of goods, Partner States have effectively eliminated Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) as they arise and have cumulatively eliminated a significant number of 184 NTBs with only a few remain outstanding,” said Dr. Mathuki.
