Announcing the Death of Ms. Maria Ruhere

ANNOUNCING THE DEATH OF MS MARIA RUHERE

It is with profound sadness that the East African Community announces the untimely passing of Ms. Maria Ruhere, on Thursday 12, August, 2021.

During her years of service, as a Committee Assistant with the East African Legislative Assembly, Maria approached her duties with diligence and dedication.

The EAC has therefore lost a committed officer who always did her best to support the activities of the East African Legislative Assembly by providing administrative and research support.

The EAC conveys heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the late Maria Ruhuere.  

MAY THE ALMIGHTY GOD REST HER SOUL IN ETERNAL PEACE.

East African Health Platform pays courtesy call on EAC Secretary General

…as the Secretary General calls for more action as opposed to advocacy from Civil Society and Private Sector

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 13th August, 2021: A delegation from the East African Health Platform (EAHP) led by Dr. Aflodis Kagaba, today paid a courtesy call on the Secretary General of the East African Community, Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mathuki at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.

Hon. (Dr). Mathuki and Dr. Kagaba discussed the role of the Civil Society and Private Sector in health matters in the region.

EAC inks Joint Action Plan with India in readiness for Mutal Recognition Agreement to facilitate faster clearance times for Accredited Traders

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 13th August, 2021: Traders from the East African Community (EAC) stand to benefit from faster clearance of their goods and lower costs of running their business following the signing of a Joint Action Plan between the EAC and the Government of India.

The Joint Action Plan will pave the way for a full Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) between the two parties.

Preparations in high gear for the 2nd EAC Regional Science, Technology and Innovation hybrid Conference

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 12th August, 2021: The 2nd East African Community Regional Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Conference is set to be held from 20th to 22nd October, 2021 under the theme: “The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation in EAC Regional Integration and Socio-Economic Development in the phase of Covid-19 Pandemic.” 

The objective of the 2nd EAC Regional STI Conference is to provide a platform for information sharing and networking among scientists, technologists, innovators and industrialists from a wide range of sectors including the academia, the industry, the public and the private sector.

The conference is geared towards providing a platform for the players in the STI and stakeholders in the EAC and beyond to share their experiences and results within the knowledge and technology generation, translation and transfer chain.

EAC Secretary General pushes for a coordinated approach among Partner States in countering Covid-19 Pandemic

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 11th August 2021: The East African Community (EAC) Secretary General, Hon. (Dr.) Peter Mathuki, has called for a coordinated approach among EAC Partner States in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Hon. Mathuki called for the harmonization of COVID-19 testing charges and quarantine administrative procedures across the region. 

Dr. Mathuki further pushed for the strengthening of public-private sector cooperation for joint investment in the manufacturing COVID-19 vaccines.

The EAC takes this opportunity to inform all prospective candidates for the various positions advertised in July 2021, that the recruitment process is ongoing.

The EAC has concluded the sorting and profiling exercise, which has paved way for the commencement of the shortlisting process.

The shortlisting process is expected to be completed in September, 2021

The candidates shortlisted for the various positions will be published on the EAC website (www.eac.int), with further information on the interview process.

EAC Secretariat to prioritise strengthening Public-Private Partnerships in efforts to steer joint investment in vaccine manufacturing

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 06th August, 2021: Kenyan private sector players have expressed optimism in making steps towards recovery of Covid-19, following a commitment by the East African Community Secretariat to prioritise strengthening public-private sector partnerships between the private sector in the region and EAC Partner States governments, to jointly invest in vaccine manufacturing in the region. 

The EAC Secretary General, Hon. Dr. Peter Mathuki, said that there was need for a coordinated approach in handling COVID-19 in the region and emphasized on the need for local production of vaccines.

Preparations in high gear for the 8th East Africa Health and Scientific Conference

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 30th July, 2021: The 8th East Africa Health and Scientific Conference and International Health Exhibition and Trade Fair (EAHSC) is set to be held under a hybrid format in Nairobi, Kenya from 17th to 19th November, 2021 under the theme: East African Community Sustainable Development Goal on Health: Reflection and Path ahead to 2030.

The Conference will offer a wide range of technical presentations reflecting developments in the Health sector in the region and around the world. Discussions will focus on areas such as Reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health; Infectious Diseases; Universal Health Coverage; as well as Non-communicable diseases such as mental health and environmental risks.

The 2021 edition of the EAHSC will also incorporate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the region, specifically, the lessons learned and the epidemiology of the pandemic. Further, the Conference will provide room for discussions around Covid-19 vaccines - with a particular focus on: the procurement aspect, and the perception of the vaccines by citizens in the region; Covid-19 coverage and monitoring; management of Covid-19 cases; as well as the Covid-19 variants identified in the region.

The 8th EAHSC will also feature an international health exhibition and trade fair. Research institutions, health care facilities, medical/health academic institutions, medical and pharma industries, NGO's, CSO's, Ministries, EAC Secretariat, International organizations, UN agencies (WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNESCO, etc.) will showcase their services and products at the fair.

Participants to showcase products from research, academia, healthcare services and the health sector in general at the exhibition and trade fair.

Call for Abstracts

The East African Health Research Commission (EAHRC) invites scholars, health professionals, scientists to submit their abstracts under the following thematic areas:

Abstract Topics

Main Theme: East African Community Sustainable Development Goal on Health: Reflection and Path Ahead to 2030. 

Sub-theme 1: Reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health

Sub-theme 2: Infectious Diseases

Sub-theme 3: Non-communicable diseases, mental health and environmental risks, substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol, tobacco, global deaths, and injuries from road traffic accidents.

Sub-theme 4: Universal Health Coverage

Sub-theme 5: COVID-19 Pandemic

Submission of Abstracts will close on 4th September, 2021.

About the EAHSC

The EAC Council of Ministers approved convening of the biennual event and to be hosted on a rotational basis by the EAC Partner States through their respective National Ministries responsible for EAC Affairs, Ministries responsible for Health, and other relevant organizations, and in close collaboration with regional and international health-related NGOs, civil society organizations, individuals, and stakeholders.

The Health and Scientific conferences provide a forum to contribute towards strengthening regional cooperation in the health sector, in line with Article 118 of the Treaty for the establishment of EAC as well as other relevant provisions of the EAC Common Market Protocol.

EAC lauds the Republic of Kenya for waiving visa requirements for citizens of the Republic of South Sudan

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 29th July 2021: The East African Community (EAC) has hailed the decision by the Republic of Kenya to waive the requirement of obtaining a visa to enter Kenya for the citizens of the Republic of South Sudan holding a valid passport issued by the Government of South Sudan. 

The EAC Secretary General, Hon. Dr. Peter Mathuki, said that the move was in line with the decision announced by the Chair of the EAC Heads of State, H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta, during the 21st Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State held on 27th February, 2021.
