NOTICE OF INQUIRY INTO THE MERGER INVOLVING VODAFONE KENYA LIMITED AND SAFARICOM PLC

EAC COMPETITION AUTHORITY MERGER INQUIRY NOTICE NO. 1 OF 2026

It is hereby notified in terms of Regulation 8 of the EAC Competition (Mergers and Acquisitions) Regulations, 2025 (hereinafter referred to as the Regulations) that the EAC Competition Authority (the Authority) after receiving a notification in terms of Section 11 of the East African Community Competition (Amendment) Act, 2023 (the Act) involving Vodafone Kenya Limited and Safaricom PLC, intends to embark on an inquiry in terms of Part IV of the Act and Part III of the Regulations.

EAC MSMEs Trade Fair Concludes with Tanzanian Innovation Clinching Best Exhibitor Award

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 19th November, 2025: East Africans stand to gain from more integrated markets, better access to financing and wider opportunities for small businesses to grow, following commitments made by Partner State government officials and sector players during the 25th East African Community (EAC) Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Trade Fair held in Nairobi, Kenya.

Partner State Ministers responsible for Trade and MSME Development, as well as EAC Affairs, also committed to accelerating MSME competitiveness within the evolving green economy, noting the importance of supporting MSMEs through targeted green-finance mechanisms, technical assistance and closer collaboration with business support organisations.

EAC Trade on the Rise as Leaders Commit to Addressing Barriers at the 25th MSMEs Trade Fair

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 12th November, 2025: East Africans are trading more with each other and benefiting from an increasingly connected marketplace, with intra-EAC trade growing by 27%, from USD 14.2 billion to USD 18 billion between June 2024 and June 2025.

Within the same period, total EAC trade with the rest of the world increased by 22%, rising from USD 115.4 billion to USD 140.8 billion.

Somalia Launches National Monitoring Committee to Eliminate Non-Tariff Barriers

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 17th April, 2025: The Federal Republic of Somalia has officially launched its National Monitoring Committee (NMC) on the Elimination of Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs), marking a major milestone in its integration into the East African Community (EAC) Customs Union and Common Market.

The launch took place during a three-day workshop held from 13th to 15th April, 2025 at Afrik Hotel in Mogadishu. The event was jointly organised by the EAC Secretariat and the Government of Somalia.
