EAC Sectoral Council on Cooperation in Defence Affairs convenes to discuss defence issues across the region

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 13th May, 2025:  The 40th Meeting of the Sectoral Council on Cooperation in Defence Affairs is currently underway at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. This meeting brings together key defence stakeholders from the eight (8) EAC Partner States to discuss crucial matters related to cooperation in defence across the region.

The five-day meeting started with the Session of the Defence Experts Working Group on Operations and Training from Monday 12th and today 13th May 2025; Session of the Sectoral Committee on Cooperation in Defence, tomorrow Wednesday, 14th May 2025; Session of the Consultative Committee on Cooperation in Defence slated for Thursday, 15th May, 2025; and the Session of the Sectoral Council on Co-operation in Defence Affairs to be held on Friday, 16th May, 2025.

The meeting features a comprehensive agenda that includes reports on: Chief Executive Officers of the EAC military industrial facilities availed for shared utilisation, Defence Experts Working Group (DEWG) to develop a roadmap for the establishment of an online repository of all documents used in EAC Conferences and Exercises; and consideration of the Draft Defence Sector Calendar of Activities for the Period July – December 2025.

In addition, the meeting will consider: the Status of Implementation of Previous Decisions of the Sectoral Council. The 40th Meeting of the Sectoral Council on Cooperation in Defence Affairs has been convened pursuant to Article 10 of the EAC Protocol on Cooperation in Defence Affairs and in accordance with the EAC Calendar of Activities for the period January – June 2025.
