Preparation in high gear for the 2nd EAC Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Conference

East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 20th October, 2021: The 2nd East African Community Regional Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Conference is set to be held from 27th to 29th October, 2021 in Bujumbura, Burundi and virtually.

The theme of the event is: The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation in EAC Regional Integration and Socio-Economic Development in the phase of Covid-19 Pandemic.” 

The objective of the 2nd EAC Regional STI Conference is to provide a platform for information sharing and networking among scientists, technologists, innovators and industrialists and other STI stakeholders from a wide range of sectors including the academia, industry, the public and the private sector.

The Conference is expected to stimulate the establishment and strengthening of strategic alliances among stakeholders; build collaborations and networks; and harness partnerships to promote the generation, dissemination and translation of research findings in the region. 

Presentations in the conference will be on the following sub thematic areas, which are aligned to the regional development strategies and the EAC Vision 2050:

  • Agriculture, Food Security and Rural Development
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Natural Resources and Environment
  • Infrastructure
  • Energy and Industrial Development
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

The Conference will feature keynote speeches on topical STI themes, Sectoral presentations and plenary discussions; parallel session presentation and discussion of scientific papers; ministerial roundtable discussion and an exhibition and Trade Fair. The resolutions of the Conference will be published and used to inform region policy and promote the development, management and application of STI for socioeconomic development.

The three-day conference will be held in a hybrid format through virtual and face-to-face platforms. The Conference is organized by the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) and the Inter-University Council of East Africa (IUCEA) in collaboration with stakeholders of STI in the region including, Ministries responsible for STI, National Councils/Commissions of Science and Technology in Partner States, universities, and research institutions among other stakeholders with funding support from GIZ-Tanzania. 

EASTECO and IUCEA are institutions of the East African Community (EAC), an intergovernmental regional organization composed of six Partner States including the Republic of Burundi, the Republic of Kenya, The Republic of Rwanda, The Republic of Uganda, the Republic of South Sudan, and the United Republic of Tanzania. The two institutions are mandated to promote and coordinate the development, management and application of science, technology, technology, human resource and higher education in the region.
