EACRF Force Commander's visit to Mweso, Kitchanga and Kirolirwe in Masisi territory

The Force Commander EACRF Maj Gen Aphaxard Kiugu,in the company of Brig Generals Emmanuel Kaputa & Michael Kibuye,Colonel Jok Akech,among other Staff Officers on 14th Aug 2023 made a command visit to Burundi troops in Kirolirwe,Kitchanga & Mweso in Masisi territory,Eastern DRC

He was received in the BURCON's Area of Responsibility (AOR) by BURCON Commander Col Baranyikwa Ildephonse, & briefed by Maj Sadiki Bayingana - Mweso FOB Officer Commanding (OC), Maj Claude Ndikumana - OC Kitchanga FOB & Maj Noe Ndayiragije - OC Kirolirwe FOB respectively on current security situation, successes, humanitarian assistance efforts, shortcomings & future plans. The contingent reported a significant return of IDPs & the opening up of the Sake-Kitachanga- Mweso Main Supply Route that has enhanced the free movement of people & goods.

The FC took cognizance of the re-opening of learning institutions within the AOR where 7 primary schools, 5 secondary schools & 3 higher learning institutions are currently operational after remaining closed for a long time, following the insecurity situation in the region.

He instructed the BURCON Commander to continue sensitizing the population on the need to have learners go back to school. Speaking to the troops, the FC praised their accomplishments thus far & their exemplary professionalism, sacrifice & commitment in carrying out operations.

He noted that since BURCON was deployed, the Western subsector has seen economic and humanitarian agencies resume their activities.

"All these activities are indicators of progressive resumption of peace and our primary duty remains the Protection of Civilians and their property. The numerous recoveries of stolen livestock attest to this commitment which we should all be proud,” said the FC.

He encouraged them to uphold positive interactions with the local population & intensify day & night patrols, with the goal of defeating the Armed Groups that are determined to disrupt the peace in Eastern DRC, as ongoing efforts to reestablish peace and stability in the area.

During the visit, he engaged with the local community, who expressed their gratitude for the presence of the EACRF troops in the area and pledged to support them in the ongoing peace and stability efforts.

The FC’s visit is intended to be a morale bolster to troops across the Masisi, Rutshuru and Nyiragongo territories that form the multinational EACRF Joint Operation Area.
