
35th Meeting of the Sectoral Council of Ministers Responsible for EAC Affairs and Planning and the 58th Extraordinary Meeting of the EAC Council of Ministers underway in Arusha
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 2nd September, 2025: The East African Community (EAC) Secretariat is currently hosting the 35th Meeting of the Sectoral Council of Ministers Responsible for EAC Affairs and Planning (SCEACMP) and the 58th Extraordinary Meeting of the EAC Council of Ministers at it’s Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
The parallel meetings, which began on 31st August, 2025 and are scheduled to conclude on 6th September, 2025, have brought together Senior Officials, Permanent/Principal/Under Secretaries, and Ministers from Ministries Responsible for EAC Affairs and other key Ministries from the eight EAC Partner States.
The objective of the two meetings is to deliberate on key policy and strategic matters geared towards advancing regional integration and sustainable development across the Community.
The 35th SCEACMP commenced with the session of Senior Officials, held from 31st August to 1st September 2025. This will be followed by the session of the Coordination Committee, comprising Permanent/Principal/Under Secretaries on 3rd September, 2025 and will culminate with the Ministerial Session on 5th September, 2025.
The SCEACMP is deliberating on a number of high-priority agenda items, including the Draft 7th EAC Development Strategy, the Draft Terms of Reference (ToR) for reviewing the EAC Vision 2050, and the Draft ToR for developing a Regional Language Policy.
In addition, the meeting is reviewing the Draft EAC Calendar of Activities for July - December 2025 and considering progress updates on the elimination of Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) in the region.
Running in parallel, the 58th Extraordinary Council Meeting is placing strong emphasis on strengthening the institutional capacity of the EAC by addressing critical human resource issues.
The agenda includes consideration of the Report of Technical Experts on Job Descriptions to ensure clarity and alignment of roles, as well as a review of the Operational Manual for the Implementation of the Quota System in staff recruitment to promote inclusivity across the Community.
The 58th Extraordinary Meeting commenced today, 2nd September, 2025 with the Senior Officials session, to be followed by the Session of Permanent/Principal/Under Secretaries on 4th September, and will conclude with the Ministerial Session on 6th September ,2025.
The two Council meetings underscore the EAC’s steadfast commitment to deepening regional cooperation and accelerating socio-economic development among its Partner States.
