
25th Ordinary Meeting of the EAC Sectoral Council of Ministers of Health currently underway in Arusha, Tanzania
East African Community Headquarters, Arusha, Tanzania, 7th May, 2025: The 25th Ordinary Meeting of the East African Community (EAC) Sectoral Council of Ministers responsible for Health is currently underway in Arusha, Tanzania.
The five –day meeting kicked off with the Session of Senior Officials which is expected to conclude today 7th May, 2025 while the Session of Permanent/Principal/Under Secretaries or the Coordination Committee has been scheduled for Thursday, 8th May, 2025. The Session of Ministers/Cabinet Secretaries will be held on Friday, 9th May, 2025
Among the items on the agenda of the meeting are the consideration of various reports including those on the: EAC Technical Working Group on the prevention and control of Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases; Status of Operationalisation of the EAC Regional Network of Reference Laboratories for Communicable Diseases Project; Progress of Implementation of Previous Decisions of the EAC Sectoral Council of Ministers of Health; and the development of a Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanism as well as EAC Regional Strategy to end HIV / AIDs, TB & STI’s by 2030.
In addition, the Sectoral Council is also expected to consider reports on the EAC Technical working group on Medicines, Food Safety and Health Technologies and Progress on the Adoption of the EAC Pharmaceutical Bill, 2020 .
Meanwhile, the EAC Secretariat is expected to launch phase III of the EAC Regional Network of Reference Laboratories for Communicable Diseases during the Ministerial Session on Friday, 9th, May 2025. The 12 million euros project will focus on strengthening laboratory capacities on pandemic prevention and response in line with the One Health approach in the region.
