The provision of affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all by 2030 – Sustainable Development Goal 7 -is essential for the development of sustainable economies, as it advances and strengthens productive capacities that promote socio-economic development in an environmentally sound manner. Although a variety of regional energy plans in the EAC region exist, energy strategies and policies in the EAC countries are driven primarily at the national level. The key ingredients for such successful long term energy policies depend on effective knowledge management and capacity building, ensuring that all policy decision makers can take informed decisions on the design and implementation of policies to enhance universal access to electricity and clean cooking.

The sustainable energy forum will serve as a platform to discuss ways that multi-stakeholder partnerships, such as the Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) can remove barriers that limit the availability of affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy services. Moreover, the forum will enable discussions about strategies that allow scale, and support off-grid, mini-grid and grid- based solutions together, and harmonize RE & EE policies, to upscale financing in RE & EE projects and technologies, to exchange knowledge and experiences, and to inform about regional programmes. Furthermore the sustainable energy forum will facilitate a workshop on sustainable cities, the Geothermal potential and projects in East Africa, as well as a workshop on gender responsive and socially inclusive approaches to sustainable energy solutions.
