Amb. Libérat Mfumukeko
Amb. Libérat Mfumukeko is the current Secretary General of the East African Community. He was appointed with effect from 26th April 2016.
Previously he served as the EAC Deputy Secretary General in charge of Finance and Administration from 29th April 2015 to 25th April, 2016.
Amb. Mfumukeko has over twenty five (25) years of work experience in both private and public sector. Before joining the EAC he was, from 2013 to 2015, the CEO of the largest state-owned company in Burundi, the Electricity and Water National Company (REGIDESO) and Chairman of the Ethiopia based East African Power Pool (EAPP). From 2012 to 2013 he served as the Principal Advisor to the President of the Republic of Burundi in charge of Economic Affairs (2012-2013) with a Ministerial rank.
Amb. Mfumukeko was the first CEO of the Burundi Investment Promotion Authority (2009-2012) after serving as an Economic Expert at the United Nations (UNDP and FAO) from 2006 to 2009.
From 1990 to 2006 he worked as an employee, consultant or international trader in the USA and France for various institutions including Banque Populaire, Électricité et Gaz de France (EDF - GDF), Mobil Oil, Decathlon, FUBU, and Karl Kani.
Amb. Mfumukeko holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics & Corporate Management (Université Francois Rabelais of Tours - France), an MBA from Clark University – (MA, USA), a Diploma in Leadership from the Kennedy School of Government (Harvard University, USA), and a Diploma in Russian Language from the Preparatory Faculty of Moscow State University - Lomonossov (Russia). In 2020, Amb. Mfumukeko was invited to receive a PhD (hc) from Clark University (MA, USA).
Amb. Mfumukeko is fluent in English, French, Kirundi, Kiswahili and Russian. He has an extensive international experience having lived and/or worked in Burundi, DR Congo, Rwanda, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Russia, France, and USA.
